The History of Hindustan Times Newspaper

Hindustan Times is one of the largest circulated newspapers in India by circulation figures and it is the second most widely read newspaper in the country. It has outstanding popularity, especially in Northern India. There was a need for an English newspaper to reach out to the non-Punjabi readers of northern India and thus, Hindustan Times was founded by Sunder Singh Lyallpuri who was also the founder of the Akali movement in Punjab Province. Madan Mohan Malaviya and Tara Singh were among the members of the Managing Committee. Most of the early funding of the paper came from the Sikhs in Canada. From the very beginning, Hindustan Times had a nationalistic outlook and was opposed to the British.

Hindustan Times was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi on 26th September 1924, thus, marking the beginning of its journey. The first issue was published from Naya Bazar, Delhi. It contained writings and articles from C. F. Andrews and Cattamanchi Ramalinga Reddy, among others.

In 1927, Hindustan Times was reborn as Hindustan Times Pvt. Ltd. a limited liability company and was bought by Madan Mohan Malaviya. In 1928, K.M. Panikkar was chosen as the new editor by Mahatma Gandhi. At this time, running into financial troubles, the paper was finally bought by G.D Birla. In 1937, Devdas Gandhi was appointed as managing editor of the newspaper, apposition which he retained till 1957.

Hindustan Times had its roots in the Indian Independence Movement for which it faced the famous Hindustan Times Contempt Case of 1941 in Allahabad Court. In 1942, the paper stopped publishing for four and a half months as it refused to accept British imposition of newspaper censorship. With India gaining independence in 1947, Hindustan Times attained the position of one of the dominant newspapers published from Delhi. By 1957, the circulation of Hindustan Times almost doubled to more than 1 lakhs 40 thousand as the K.K Birla took over from G.D Birla. Edited by many eminent people in India, including Devdas Gandhi, Sri Mulgaonkar, B.G. Verghese and Khushwant Singh, Hindustan Times continued to remain one of the most popular newspapers of India.

In 1999, Hindustan Times celebrated its platinum anniversary and with the beginning of the 21st century, five new editions were launched for Kolkata, Bhopal, Ranchi, Chandigarh and Jaipur.  In 2003, the media business of Hindustan Times was de-merged and incorporated under HT Media Ltd.

How to Sell Newspaper Ads to a Skeptic ?

In an Age where Digital Marketing is a popular option for posting Ads, Advertisers are naturally becoming skeptical about newspaper advertising. Selling a newspaper ad nowadays to a skeptical person successfully is pretty much similar to selling a Refrigerator to an Eskimo. Not all of us can be as smart as the salesman in the above picture.

So, how do we make this possible? How do we sell a newspaper ad to a skeptical person?

It can be a good idea to try the following tips that can bring you luck:

1.  Be well-informed- Know your product very well.  All the features and benefits must be known to you thoroughly to answer all the queries of the Client satisfactorily. This will help the Customer to consider your proposals.

2.  Know the customer- Know the Customer and his buying habits. Understand how to align your product with the overall requirements of the customer. Let us suppose you know that your Client posts many Ads during a particular time of a year for certain reasons, approach him before that so that he can remember you while booking the Ads this time.

3.  Be Confident- Be confident about what you are offering. Believe in the values of the Company and its products. No one can sell anything successfully unless he believes in it. A lack of confidence can ruin a good prospect of doing business.

4. Provide appropriate information- Be transparent while doing business. Give them appropriate and enough information about your company and the product for the customer to understand properly. Never hold yourself back from disclosing essential data. Be true and never exaggerate, try to build faith in the minds of your customers with honesty. Talking too much and delivering less is of no use but performing or over-performing according to whatever you have told him will surely help you.

5. Provide Discounts- Provide offers and discounts that would fascinate him. Everybody likes to get a bit more on their purchase, by providing him this benefit you can surely mold his thoughts to your advantage.

Give them details about how the Newspaper Ad industry is doing well instead of all the criticisms. You can show them reports from recent surveys that support your views. Explain how the Experts in the Market are predicting growth here, research and study as much as possible to equip yourself with sufficient and correct answers.
