The History of Daily Thanthi Newspaper

Daily Thanthi or Dina Thanthi, is the largest selling Tamil Newspaper in India. It was founded in the year 1942 by S. P. Adithanar who was a Lawyer and a Politician.

While studying law at Middle Temple, London he was profoundly influenced by the English Tabloid Daily Mirror. After finishing his studies, Adithanar started practicing in Singapore. In the year 1942, when Singapore was seized by the Japanese, he returned to India.

In the same year, he established Daily Thanthi and a weekly magazine named Tamizhan. The creation of the newspaper was based on the lines of Daily Mirror that reached out to thousands of people daily with incredible news. Since its inception, it has steadily developed itself.

It first began its operations in Madurai and then expanded to include other Editions as well. The lack of newspapers in the Southern Districts of Tamil Nadu in that period made the local people to read old newspapers that were printed in Madras, the expansion of Daily Thanthi helped in providing fresh news every day for the people to read. The simple language used in the paper attracted many readers.

After the death of S.P. Adithanar in 1981, his son Sivanthi Adithan took the responsibilities of the Daily Thanthi group on his shoulders. Most surprisingly, he started to work in this Company as a mere worker despite being the owner’s son and gradually rose to the position of the Editor.

Maalai Malar, an evening newspaper and Thanthi TV, a 24 hour Tamil News Channel are a part of the Daily Thanthi Group.

After the death of Mr. Sivanthi Adithan in 2013, his son Sivanthi Balasubramanian Adityan now looks after the business of the Thanthi Group. By looking at the illustrious history of the newspaper we can undoubtedly say that the winning streak is here to continue for generations to come.
