A Trip Back in Time: How People Talked About Newspaper Ads 10 Years Ago

Newspapers have been there for centuries and so has newspaper advertising. It is after all the oldest kind of advertising long before television and long before today’s internet generation.

It’s been a lot of ups and downs of the ad industry. If today can be considered as the era of digital media 10yrs ago it used to be the era of print media.

Let us go through a memory lane 10yrs ago 2010, the golden era of newspaper advertising.

Unlike today the internet was not so much available for the majority of the Indian population and smartphones were just invented. Back then print media advertising was thriving.

People looking for jobs would buy a newspaper scanning through the recruitment column to find the desired employment opportunities. Office workers would always carry a newspaper with them to read in their daily travel to work. This led advertisers to advertise more than ever in the newspaper. Whether to promote a new product, advertise a retail sale or just simply look for employees.

It’s not like newspapers were not popular media to advertise before 2010. It was, but 2010 was different; it was the golden era of newspaper advertising.

The readership numbers saw a surge and so did the innovations in the advertising. All the innovation advertising seen today in newspapers mostly started in 2010. More and more editions were introduced by each publication to reach every corner of the nation in an attempt to reach more and more readers.

It was also noticed that readers were more likely to respond to an advertisement if it was printed in a newspaper. Newspaper advertising started meaning as a trustworthy source for the advertisement.

Newspaper Ads

Even with such a great image and response, newspaper advertising faced competition from newly introduced digital media which came along the newly introduced smartphones. Allowing users to have access to the internet on the go 24/7 which introduced a new platform for advertising the digital media.

This was threatening although newspapers had the reputation and sophistication it soon became a traditional advertising platform.

But as the newspaper industry is always evolving and adapting to the new age, many had the idea of mixing the two. Like our agency releaseMyAd, brought in a revolution in the newspaper advertising experience. Get adapted to the smartphone generation not forgetting the past. Newspaper advertising still had the highest readership back in 2010 and also the most advertising media. So we allowed advertisers to book their ads simply in 10 mins without going to any local agency but simply by using the internet in their smartphones.

This played a vital part in keeping newspapers thriving even when the new digital medium came into existence.

Other than this e-paper concept introduced by almost all newspapers operating even today has kept the newspaper alive from its golden era 2010 to the present day.

Today even if the physical newspaper is at a downfall seeing not much growth in readership numbers as it did in 2010 this old advertising medium is far from extinction as e-paper readership has been growing each day keeping newspaper advertising alive for decades to come.

The Biggest Problem With Newspaper Advertising, And How You Can Fix It

Newspaper advertising can be highly beneficial to promote your products, finding you the right employee or just to give a formal advertisement for legal purposes.

But as we shed light upon these pros of newspaper advertising lets us discuss the problems of this oldest advertising medium.

As you might know, 1/3rd of the literate population reads a newspaper daily in our country. That seems a high number. But we must not forget that sadly even today India has a more illiterate population than literate. Hence there is a huge number of audiences you as advertisers are missing out on due to this reason. The solution is simply making the education mass grow more and more as a nation. But you as an advertiser can think of advertising in regional language papers more than a national one. Most Indian populations are more likely to know their mother tongue than English giving you an edge on readership number for your ad matter.

Advertising on Newspapers

A single newspaper edition cannot cover the entire demographic of the country. A single edition of any newspaper can only cover one particular area where it is circulated. To fix this you can advertise in more than one edition of the same newspaper covering multiple destinations of your choice. With the help of releaseMyAd, you may also consider going for affordable discount packages allowing to cover more than 2 locations at once cost-effectively.

Other than this, newspapers, as we all know, have a really short shelf life. An ad printed in today’s edition is only relevant if the reader reads the newspaper today itself. Suppose he is to busy to even glance over it, forgets about viewing it the whole day your ad becomes irrelevant . to combat this you should advertise regularly and if that’s not possible you can opt for a front-page advertisement which can be costly but will grab the reader’s attention even if he forgets to read the entire paper that day.

Advertisements in a newspaper mean your ad will probably be printed along with editorial articles. but most newspapers also have a page dedicated only to advertisements known as the classified section. This allows readers to view ads in one glance giving them the convenience to find ads they were looking to view without reading the entire paper. Like a job seeker who might have only bought the paper to look at the current employment options, he could apply to, finding all the recruitment ads in one page makes it easier for his search.but on the downside with so many ads printed in a single sheet makes a clutter which influences the reader’s attention. To avoid this you can go for a display ad or full-page ads getting the full attention from the reader. Also just putting an enhancement helps your ad stand out in the clutter of a classified ad.

The digital medium has taken over our lives nowadays influencing almost every sector and advertising is no different. Social media ads and internet campaigns are growing noticeably in India and are giving a tough competition to this traditional advertising medium. Although they are new trending advertising mediums one must not forget even today newspapers hold the most readership and most advertised and trustworthy advertising platform. The high readership number should be taken advantage of as an advertiser to publish their ad matter and as for the internet ad competition its already being overcome through the e-paper concept which allows readers to see their newspaper on the internet without them purchasing the physical copy.

There are many problems as well as advantages of newspaper advertising and instead of overlooking the negatives we should embrace them and look for solutions to overcome them in this changing times of advertising.

The History of Classified Advertisements

Classified advertising is a form of advertising which is commonly visible in newspapers, magazines, periodicals and over the internet. They are short advertising messages, generally grouped under specific headings (known as classifications, classes or categories), in a separate section, and may be charged or distributed free of cost.

Newspaper Classified Ad

Generally, termed as “want” ads, classified advertisements are relatively cheaper as the content is short and are charged on the basis of characters, words or lines. The following is a brief history of classified advertisements :

  • Public Notice Carving :

The oldest form of classified ads can be traced back all the way to 2000 BC, when the Ancient Egyptians invented outdoor advertising as they carved public notices into steel. They also made use of papyrus to create sales messages and various wall posters.

Later, in around 59 BC, the Roman Empire started publishing Acta Diurna (Daily Acts) or government announced bulletins, as ordered by the then Roman general, Julius Caesar. They started carving the notices in stone or metal (since these were the most commonly used materials back then) and posted them in public places.

  • Handwritten News Sheets :

During the Imperial China period, court officials made use of news sheets, referred to as “Tipao”, which were produced by the government. This was during the late Han dynasty. Tipao, which literally meant “reports from the official residences,” were a publication issued by both the local and the central governments in imperial China. These publications dated as early as 206 BC – 220 BC (Han Dynasty).

News Sheets were handwritten on silk and strictly meant to be read by government officials only.

  • Public Poster Advertisements :

The first handwritten notices date back all the way to the 15th century. These notices used to appear in various public places, nailed on numerous posts and walls in England.

During the mid 1600s, notices for lost property had become extremely common. Also, it was during this period when the handbill emerged in England. The handbill used to be a small printed ad, notice or announcement distributed by hand.

  • Newspaper Classifieds :

The form of classified advertisement which is known to us today, was first recorded in the year 1704, when the very first newspaper advertisement was placed in the Boston News-Letter, on the lookout for a buyer for an Oyster Bay, Long Island, Estate. This ad literally marked the birth of newspaper classifieds. About 14 years later (in 1718), the weekly Jamaica Courant followed the trend in Kingston.

By 2007, about 6,580 daily newspapers in the world selling around 395 copies a day already existed. The newspaper industry continued to grow until 2008, when economic recession posed a setback to the entire world. The worldwide economic crisis, coupled with the rapid growth of internet-based alternatives, saw a serious decline in newspaper advertising and circulation of diurnal newspapers. In fact, most papers had closed business while others had cut back operations.

With the continuation of increase in online classifieds, newspaper’s revenues from classified ads continued to drop. In 2007, classified advertising for some of the largest newspaper chains had dropped by a good 14-20 percent, while traffic to classified websites grew by 23 percent, clearly showing how online classifieds were gaining more popularity than the newspaper classifieds.

According to NAA, between 2002 and 2012, classified advertisements suffered a major decline accounting to around 71 percent (from $15,898 to $4,626 in revenue). This decline was mostly attributed to the emergence of web-based classified alternatives.

  • Online Classifieds :

By the year 1995, the internet disruption of classified ads started. Two new companies were established in 1995: AdOne and Craigslist. AdOne is known to be one of the oldest classified websites in the world.

Craigslist is another site held responsible for popularizing online classifieds. Craigslist is a classified ad website where the ads are classified into different sections. Today, there are hundreds of alternatives and free online classifieds to choose from.

  • Social Classifieds :

Multiple social networks like Facebook, MySpace, Orkut, and others started offering a platform for social classified ads. These social networks enabled their users to promote sales for products and services within the social network.

In May 2007, about 3 years after the launch of Facebook, the Facebook marketplace was introduced, allowing users to post classified advertisements without being charged. These free ads fell within the following categories – Housing, For sale, Jobs, and Other.

In March 2009, a new version of the Marketplace application was launched. Oodle, an online marketplace based out of California, powered the new version.

  • Classifieds on Mobile Phones and Tablets :

With the introduction of smartphones and tablets, posting and searching on online classified platforms became a growing trend. Currently, there are over 300 mobile apps for classified advertising on the iPhone and Android alone, competing for a strong clientele base. Responsive websites like www.releasemyad.com adopt any device, irrespective of the size or orientation. The mobile application further enhances the process of booking classified advertisements online.
