The Shillong Times is an English language daily newspaper that is based in the state of Meghalaya. Just as its name suggests, the newspaper has its headquarters in Shillong, the state capital of Meghalaya. The newspaper holds the distinction of being the oldest English language daily newspaper in the North East region of India.
Originally, The Shillong Times was launched as a weekly newspaper in a tabloid format. The first edition of the newspaper was printed on the 10th of August, 1945. In the year 1958, the newspaper was converted from a weekly to a daily. However, it was made into a weekly newspaper again within six months due to financial constraints. It was in March 1987 that The Shillong Times was once again made into a daily newspaper after overcoming its challenges, and it has remained a daily newspaper ever since. On the 9th of November, 1992, The Shillong Times launched a second edition from the town of Tura in the Garo Hills of Meghalaya. In the year 2009, The Shillong Times Pvt. Ltd. launched a Bengali language daily newspaper called ‘Sangbad Lahari’.
