The History of Hindustan Times Newspaper

Hindustan Times is one of the largest circulated newspapers in India by circulation figures and it is the second most widely read newspaper in the country. It has outstanding popularity, especially in Northern India. There was a need for an English newspaper to reach out to the non-Punjabi readers of northern India and thus, Hindustan Times was founded by Sunder Singh Lyallpuri who was also the founder of the Akali movement in Punjab Province. Madan Mohan Malaviya and Tara Singh were among the members of the Managing Committee. Most of the early funding of the paper came from the Sikhs in Canada. From the very beginning, Hindustan Times had a nationalistic outlook and was opposed to the British.

Hindustan Times was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi on 26th September 1924, thus, marking the beginning of its journey. The first issue was published from Naya Bazar, Delhi. It contained writings and articles from C. F. Andrews and Cattamanchi Ramalinga Reddy, among others.

In 1927, Hindustan Times was reborn as Hindustan Times Pvt. Ltd. a limited liability company and was bought by Madan Mohan Malaviya. In 1928, K.M. Panikkar was chosen as the new editor by Mahatma Gandhi. At this time, running into financial troubles, the paper was finally bought by G.D Birla. In 1937, Devdas Gandhi was appointed as managing editor of the newspaper, apposition which he retained till 1957.

Hindustan Times had its roots in the Indian Independence Movement for which it faced the famous Hindustan Times Contempt Case of 1941 in Allahabad Court. In 1942, the paper stopped publishing for four and a half months as it refused to accept British imposition of newspaper censorship. With India gaining independence in 1947, Hindustan Times attained the position of one of the dominant newspapers published from Delhi. By 1957, the circulation of Hindustan Times almost doubled to more than 1 lakhs 40 thousand as the K.K Birla took over from G.D Birla. Edited by many eminent people in India, including Devdas Gandhi, Sri Mulgaonkar, B.G. Verghese and Khushwant Singh, Hindustan Times continued to remain one of the most popular newspapers of India.

In 1999, Hindustan Times celebrated its platinum anniversary and with the beginning of the 21st century, five new editions were launched for Kolkata, Bhopal, Ranchi, Chandigarh and Jaipur.  In 2003, the media business of Hindustan Times was de-merged and incorporated under HT Media Ltd.
